ASHEVILLE – The Biltmore Estate, the iconic 250-room French chateau that anchors Asheville’s tourist market, has been named one of “America’s Most Beautiful Landmarks”
Travel blog ParkSleepFly analyzed Tripadvisor reviews of famous sites to come to its conclusion. The blog checked how many people rated monuments using the words “beautiful”, “pretty”, “picturesque” and “stunning” to calculate its scores for “most beautiful”.
The Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco tops the list with a “beauty review” of 3,163, but the Biltmore House comes in second with 3,042. The Golden Gate also tops the blog’s list of most beautiful world landmarks, while the Biltmore Estate came in seventh.
ParkSleepFly notes that the Biltmore House is the “largest private home in the United States at 178,926 square feet”.
“The estate is renowned for its beautiful architecture, which 3,042 reviewers agree with,” the blog states. “The main house was built in the chateau style with sculptural ornamentation inside and out, and a landscaped park-like garden. It now serves as a museum and tourist attraction.”
Other sites that round out the US top 10 are Empire State Building, National September 11 Memorial & Museum, Alcatraz Island, Statue of Liberty, Gateway Arch, St. Louis Cathedral, Mount Rushmore and the Alamo.
“To be included in this incredible collection of beautiful destinations is a pleasure, especially since the research was based on real word descriptions provided by people who have visited these famous places,” the door-to-doorman said via email. word of Biltmore Estate, LeeAnn Donnelly.
Nestled on 8,000 acres just a few miles south of downtown Asheville, the Biltmore Estate has consistently been the area’s biggest tourist draw since it opened to the public in 1930 during the height of the Great Depression. Originally the home of George Vanderbilt and his family, the house was completed in 1895.
His descendants continue to own and operate the estate.
Before the pandemic, the estate, a working farm that has a winery, two hotels and several restaurants and shops, drew around 1.4 million visitors a year. The estate closed in March 2020 due to COVID-19 but reopened in May of the same year.
This was the first closure of the estate since World War II. Visits have returned regularly since the reopening.
“We welcomed 1.4 million guests to the estate in 2021, which is more guests than in 2020,” Donnelly said.
